My yearly encounter with fall fashion is a tale as old as time. At the start of every September, I take note of the hot mess that is my closet, donate everything I swore I’d wear the year before (and, alas, did not), and open my web browser to type in the eight little letters that never steer me wrong: P-i-n-t-e-r-e-s-t.
Year after year, the Pinterest girlies serve as my go-to inspo for all things fall fashion. I might live under a rock for the majority of the year, but after a quick search and a few scrolls, I get an idea of what the cool kids are wearing and pull photos for the mood board of my dreams. And this season, the Pinterest girls got it right—here are 10 pieces I’m adding to my cart because of it:
Lug Sole Boot
If there’s one fall staple that I need to pull the trigger on after years and years of contemplation, it’s the lug sole boot. Once an item I thought would come and go, lug sole boots have proven to be a go-to, must-have item for looking chic in colder temps. These ones from Vionic Shoes are waterproof which is an absolute must for unpredictable weather, have incredible arch support (fashion meets comfort, for the win!), plus they have a zipper to make putting them on even easier. Pair with your favorite jeans for a casual look or use them to add a bit of edge to an otherwise feminine fit.

Tailored Trousers
I’ve seen Matilda Djerf wear grey tailored trousers enough times to know that this is the it-girl piece of the season. They’re the perfect low-maintenance way to elevate any outfit and pair just as seamlessly with a white tee, a black blazer, and loafers as they do with a pair of booties and a chunky knit cardigan.

Trench Coat
If there’s one word that comes to mind as I see pictures upon pictures of cool girls wearing trench coats, it’s “timeless.” The trench coat has endured seasons of fashion trends and it’s one of the most functional-meets-versatile pieces one can own. Couple with a hoodie, jeans, sneaks, and a baseball hat for an effortlessly casual look or pair with a turtle neck dress and lug sole boots for a more elevated fit. This one from Old Navy is one of the more affordable ones I’ve found so adding it to my cart is imminent.

Retro Sunnies
Our fashion editor has a similar pair of retro sunnies, and I knew that I absolutely needed them when I began my fall 2022 Pinterest research and saw them more times than I could count. These are the perfect finishing touch to make a fall fit go from “alright” to “alriiiiiiiiiight” and they’re at a price point that makes my inner-fashionista AND budget happy.

Wool Blend Blazer Coat
I have both a wool coat and an oversized blazer in my fall fashion arsenal, but do you know what I DON’T have? A wool blend blazer coat. This merging of my two favorite pieces is a match made in heaven and will carry me through some of the chilliest fall days. I can see it now: me, my pumpkin cream cold brew, this wool blend blazer coat, and a chunky turtle neck making Michigan Ave. my runway. The Pinterest girlies knew what they were doing with this one.

Cropped Vest
I’ve been eying a cropped puffer vest for a while and haven’t been able to stomach the price points that I’ve seen in this past, but this year, I’ve found this affordable one from H&M and now, the world is my oyster. Having an added layer over my running-errands fit will be such a game-changer in that too-soon-for-a-real-coat transition period and will immediately advance my cool-girl-adjacent status to Pinterest-girl chic.

Oval Shoulder Bag
Rocking a shoulder bag this fall is probably one of the least groundbreaking things I’ll do, but this year, I’m looking to invest in one with a rounded shape like this oval bag from Mango. It’s perfectly compact, looks expensive but isn’t, and will be the perfect accessory to pull together any fall look.
Boxy Oxford Shirt
I have more white button-downs shirts than I’d like to admit, but after a few years of accumulating them, I somehow fumbled the bag on owning an oversized, boxy one. One scroll on Pinterest and you already know: a boxy Oxford shirt reigns supreme. It’s a layering essential that looks just as good on it’s own as it does peeking out of a cardigan and for that, I simply NEED to add it to my collection.

Slouchy Turtle Neck Sweater
Despite popular belief, the first day of fall isn’t actually September 22 or the day that the pumpkin spice latte makes its way back to Starbucks… it’s the morning that I first don my slouchy, turtle neck sweater. Under a wool coat, paired with a puffer vest, or tied carefully around my shoulders as I wear a white button-down shirt, this slouchy turtle neck will be a force to be reckoned with.

Cropped Blazer
The cropped blazer was the one piece in my Pinterest scroll that I didn’t see coming, and naturally, I need it in my wardrobe immediately. As much as I love an oversized blazer, I will admit: There are times where I try my best to style it and still feel a bit sloppy. This cropped version gives a more tailored take on a fall classic and pairs well with your favorite jeans, monochrome trousers, or a mini skirt for a cute date night fit.
