Forward Look: Ford’s 2022 F-150 Lightning EV Targets Tesla’s Cybertruck

Days after Tesla unveiled the long-awaited Cybertruck, Ford delivered a counterpunch with its own battery-powered pickup truck.

The F-150 Lightning doesn’t sport the angular sheet metal of its futuristic rival, but the truck certainly has Tesla in its crosshairs.

The Lightning, Ford’s first electric pickup truck, looks a lot like the gasoline-powered F-150, the best-selling vehicle in America. But under the hood is a pair of electric motors that generate a combined 426 horsepower and 563 lb-ft of torque.

The Lightning offers two battery pack options. The standard 98-kWh pack will deliver up to 230 miles of range on a single charge, while the extended-range 131-kWh pack will offer up to 300 miles.

The base Lightning starts at $39,974, while the extended-range version starts at $49,974. But before you rush to your Ford dealer, be aware that the Lightning is already sold out for 2022.

The Lightning is the latest in a series of electric vehicles from Ford, which has committed to investing $30 billion in electrification by 2025. The automaker also plans to launch an electric version of its Mustang sports car in 2023.

The F-150 Lightning is a major statement of intent from Ford, which is betting big on the future of electric vehicles. The truck has the potential to be a game-changer for the automaker, and it could give Tesla a run for its money in the growing electric pickup truck market.
