Long gone are the days of Joan Rivers running E! News’ Fashion Police like the US Navy and having her Emmys red carpet best-dressed list worshipped like scripture—and yet, if you take a glimpse into Glamour editors’ staff Slack chats during awards season, you’d think we were featured guests on the legendary show.
The Emmys best-dressed list according to Glamour editors is a glossy magazine version of the “controversial, yet brave” meme from The Eric Andre Show: Not everyone’s going to agree with our top picks of the night. While some celebrities are always a given in topping our red carpet best-dressed lists (see singular-name queens Zendaya and Lizzo, both reigning champs), there are a few new faces Glamour editors are adding to their rankings: Ella Purnell in the capital H Hot-Girl brand of the moment, Miu Miu, and Insecure’s Issa Rae in Sergio Hudson both included.
Below, see our top choices dominating the Emmys red carpet best-dressed list. For a full list of all the celebrity looks, scroll through our exhaustive A-list gallery.
Lizzo
“Lizzo’s dramatic yet stunning Emmys look demanded attention, and she literally stole the stage. The bright color and long tulle train paired with the high bun was the perfect look that said ‘I’m here,’ which is fitting, considering she won her first Emmy.” —Jazmin Gathers, social media manager
Melanie Lynskey
“Melanie’s mint-colored tulle gown perfectly combines fairytale princess and classic chic.” —Samantha Barry, editor-in-chief
Andrew Garfield
“Whoever said ‘don’t wear white after Labor Day’ would eat their words once they saw Andrew Garfield at the Emmys. He looks so effortlessly chic and cool with his shades, the perfectly trimmed scruff, and just the right amount of top buttons undone.” —Anna Moeslein, deputy editor
Jean Smart
“Jean Smart uses layers and dimension in this long-sleeved white gown to accentuate her body while remaining comfortable and fashionable.” —S.B.
Zendaya
“The sky is blue. The Earth is round. Zendaya slays another red carpet. It’s getting kind of ridiculous at this point, but the Euphoria star is incapable of looking just ‘meh’ in any ensemble Law Roach puts her in. The Valentino muse wore a show-stopping ball gown by Pier Paolo Piccioli that is so huge you could probably fit another Zendaya under there. And the hair! It sits so beautifully on her shoulders, cascading down in voluminous shiny waves and topped off with a satin ribbon. It’s dramatic, it’s classic, it’s Hollywood glamour, dahhhling! So obsessed.” —Ariana Yaptangco, senior beauty editor
Issa Rae
“Issa Rae in this black-and-white Sergio Hudson gown with cutouts gives the HBO star nothing to be Insecure about. I loved seeing Issa’s new copper bob cut with the elegant dress. She looks so effortless and stunning!” —Gabriella Iannetta, associate director of audience development
Lily James
“Lily James and her stylist, Rebecca Corbin-Murray, put a lot of time and research into this look, and it shows. The custom Versace dress, which James had to be sewn into, is thought to be an homage to Pamela Anderson. (James played her in Hulu’s Pam & Tommy, for which she was nominated.) But what I really love about this look is how the chainmail catches the red carpet photographers’ lights—this is Hollywood glam at its best.” —A.M
Ella Purnell
“In a sea of halter-top dresses, Ella Purnell’s powder blue Miu Miu number managed to stand out. The most underrated look of the night, IMO!” —Hanna Lustig, staff writer
Sydney Sweeney
“Sydney Sweeney’s floral embroidered Oscar de la Renta gown has to be one of my favorite looks of the night. It’s giving chic Bridgerton vibes with a hint of princesscore, but the muted colors make it perfect for fall. Obsessed!” —Danielle Sinay, associate beauty editor
