Emma Stone Looks Like a Sexy Inspector Gadget in a Double-Trench Minidress

Emma Stone has done what seemed previously impossible: She made detective-core sexy.

Sure, there’s nothing more sensual than a classic trench coat with nothing underneath, but bar going naked, the long, shapeless fall fashion staple beloved by film noir investigators and New York It girls alike is inherently, well, long and shapeless. Stone addressed both of those issues with her latest look.

On October 4, the 34-year-old actor attended the New York Film Festival screening of her short film Bleat wearing a tailored minidress designed to look like a trench coat layered atop a second double-breasted trench coat. Thanks to the shortened hemline and slightly flared design, the look was far from frumpy while still leaning into the cool, oversized appeal of the classic coat. Suddenly the fall capsule wardrobe juggernaut is ready for the red carpet. The innovation! The creativity! Inspector Gadget would love it!

Emma Stone is not set to play a detective any time soon, but she recently partnered with Bleat director Yorgos Lanthimos on the sci-fi film Poor Things, in which she portrays a Frankenstein-esque woman brought back to life by a “brilliant and unorthodox” (read: likely unhinged) scientist. Though she dons an ultra-long black wig to play Bella Baxter, Stone is currently rocking an icy blond “cool girl bob,” courtesy of celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak and color expert Tracey Cunningham.

While she looked confident as hell in front of the step-and-repeat, Stone said she was feeling “pretty nervous” during the Bleat Q+A. “I haven’t done this in a while,” she said, per Variety, referencing the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike that has left actors unable to promote their projects (the short film received an interim agreement, so no rules were broken). No matter how she was feeling internally, she certainly looked confident…and ready to solve someone’s murder.
